First things first, Happy Easter everyone (or at least it WAS Easter when I started writing this). Alright, guess what time it is; that's right, welcome to yet another installment of Back From the Movies...and BOY do I ever have the weirdest Double Feature today, the romantic slice of life anime film Your Name. and...Smurfs: The Lost Village. Yeah, kinda like following up Filet Mignon with a Big Mac, huh? Whatever, I wanted something else, it was starting like ten minutes after I got out, wnot important.

Your Name.: I've heard about this one a while ago, and I heard that it was coming to theaters for a limited release. When I found out it was actually playing at one of my frequented theaters, I dropped everything and made sure to get the dub tickets. I'm so glad I did. This movie is beautiful, adorable, charming, funny, and easily the very best thing I've seen all year (and one of the best anime I've seen in the past 10 years, not counting One Piece; yes, better than Toriko, better than Fairy Tail, better than FMA, way better than Soul Eater Not, you can kinda see a pattern with my tastes here). Okay, the plot is that a boy named Taki and a girl named Mitshua who discover that they have the power to swap bodies with each other though they don't know what the cause of it is. They're able to communicate messages with each other through diary entries on their phones and writing messages to each other, helping one another excel in each other's lives and eventually developing romantic feelings for each other. Every single frame of this masterpiece is gorgeous: the characters are perfect and almost feel real, the story is beautiful, sweet, and even nerve-wracking, and the animation is so beautiful and shown off almost to the point of being straight up animation porn. While this movie is exceptionally sweet and adorable, it has the DARKEST third act twist I've seen in my life (which I will take to my grave and only share with those of you who've seen it yourself) but the most touching and heartwarming ending I can think of for a movie like this; this is the very first movie that I've ever stood up and applauded in. I don't care if you don't like anime; see this movie RIGHT NOW!!!! Buy it when it comes out on DVD, watch it on Netflix, give these people your money; dub or sub, it doesn't matter. If nothing else, the amount of critical, audience, and commercial acclaim for this film is simply STAGGERING: 4th Highest Grossing Japanese film of all time, 8th Highest grossing traditionally animated film (2nd highest non-Disney film, after The Simpsons Movie), and even the highest grossing anime film ever made--even dethroning Spirited Away. If you like movies, hell if you just like the feeling of joy itself, See! This! Movie!!!

Now...the other one I walked into because I had to see another movie to talk about.

Smurfs: The Lost Village- I don't even feel like going over the plot in this one; just watch Trolls. There, I spared you 75 minutes and you got to see a much better, much funnier movie than what I sat through. Yes, it's better than the live-action movies...but it still sucks. Yes, the animation is very pretty and the characters look nice, but if you just want better character designs and pretty animation then just stay home and watch Trolls. Plot? Fine: Smurfette wants to find her place, she finds out there's other Smurfs, all these new Smurfs are girls so kids can get new toys, trust me, it's just not worth your time. Hell, everyone else seems to think so too: I was THE ONLY ONE IN THAT THEATER! I spent almost the entire movie either yelling at the screen or checking my phone. Only three things came out of this experience: 1) the teaser trailer for My Little Pony: The Movie (you bet your ass I'm seeing that in the theater), 2) the Emoji Movie trailer (look, you guys better HOPE that it's offensive cuz otherwise, at best, we'll just be left with a second-rate Inside Out but with literally the worst premise for a movie in over a decade), and 3) since it's very likely that since they've pitched 0 for 3 on these, people will finally stop making Smurfs movies. I'm not saying it can't be done; I just have yet to be proven it can be done RIGHT. One thing left to end on: I never thought I'd see a Smurfs movie literally steal the ending from Pokemon: The First Movie beat for beat. No, seriously, all they're missing is Mewtwo wiping everyone's memories and flying off with the girl Smurfs; dance party, credits, that was pointless.

So, agree, disagree, ever gave a movie a standing ovation before? Drop a comment down below, and I'm sorry if this was the only thing I posted this week in terms of reviews. I got some shit going on, I'll be coming back home tomorrow, and I hope that I can give you guys the same great reviews you've come to expect from me though maybe not quite in the same frequency I've been making them so my schedule has a little breathing room.
